Prompt Chaining for Complex Tasks

Prompt chaining breaks a complex task into a sequence of simpler prompts where the output of each step feeds into the next. Instead of asking a single prompt to do everything at once, you orchestrate a pipeline of focused prompts, each responsible for one sub-task. This improves accuracy, makes intermediate steps auditable, and allows you to validate output before passing it downstream.

Prompt chaining is the foundation of agentic AI systems. A chain for processing a ShopMax customer complaint might first classify the issue type, then extract key entities, then generate a personalised response, and finally check compliance with company policy. Each step is a separate LLM call with a focused prompt, making the overall pipeline more reliable than a single monolithic prompt.

The below example builds a 4-step prompt chain that processes a ShopMax India customer email: classify, extract, draft response, and verify tone.


It gives the following output,

Step 1 - Issue type: DELIVERY_DELAY
Step 2 - Entities:
 order_id: SM-45821
 item: laptop
 days_waiting: 8
 urgency_level: HIGH
Step 3 - Draft response:
 Dear Customer, We sincerely apologise for the delay with
 order SM-45821. We have escalated this to our Pune warehouse
 team and your laptop will be dispatched within 24 hours...
Step 4 - Tone check: PROFESSIONAL

Each step in the chain does exactly one thing, making it easy to debug and improve independently. If step 3 produces poor drafts, you tune only that prompt without touching the others.
